Metal Dome VS Steel Dome
It’s no wonder that oneday I’ll write an article to talk about what a Metal dome is.
Frankly, sometimes some friends will ask me the following question:
“what’s your product? “
I said: “Metal dome“
” What? Metal dome? Do you mean the steel dome? What’s the usage of it? ”
” The metal dome is majorly used in membrane switch, mobile, mp3\mp4 player, control panels and so on…. …”
Even though after my explanation someone who whom konw little on our industry will be also confused, they explain the whole word in the synonymy words and such seperated words, in their own ways. So they will thought:‘metal’ stands for ‘steel’ and ‘dome’ for housetop or roof, so ‘metal dome’ is ‘a dome (housetop) made of steel’. (in in Chinese, it’s named “金属圆屋顶”. )
Oh, my God! A little small ‘metal dome‘ in my eyes then becomes a big ‘a dome (housetop) made of steel’? Hup, How wonderful, Inconceivability! But do you know how much the difference between them? Let’s take a brief look at these pictures.
Firstly, let’s look at the picture to show what a real ‘metal dome‘ in our industry stands for.
1) ’metal dome‘ on the finger, can you find know how small it is now?

2) Now let’s use the typeline to check the size of a ‘metal dome‘.
Oh, it’s less than 10mm. Yeah, it’s our 10 mm series metal dome, and it is a medium size, the largest ones can be made is about 20mm right now.

3) And now let take a brief look at what’s the usage of the ‘metal dome‘
a) ‘metal dome‘ on PCB

b) ‘metal dome‘ on cell phone (in fact, the ‘metal dome‘ is assembled in a metal dome array and then assembled to the motherboard of cell phone, but I can’t break out my own mobile phone to show the metal dome array, am I right?

c) ‘metal dome‘ in membrane switch

Okay, maybe you are going to know what a real ‘metal dome‘ stands for (in our industry).
Let’s explain in words: ‘metal dome‘ or named metal snap domes, tactile metal domes, made of stainless steel, are momentary switch contacts that, when used in conjunction with a printed circuit board, flex circuit, or membrane, become normally-open tactile switches. They function in the following way: The metal domes are placed on the printed circuit board by means of pressure-sensitive adhesive tape. In their relaxed state, the metal domes rest on the outer rim of the primary pathway. When pushed, the domes collapse and make contact with the secondary pathway, thereby closing the circuit. To know more about it, please click ‘metal dome‘ (http://www.metal-domes.com/products.htm )
So what’s the ‘steel dome’ standing for? Let’s browse the following pictures to check. You can also use the Google Images to search the pictures, haha: -)
1) Steel Dome (Can you see that big building? It’s the white part which we call it ‘steel dome’, or ‘housetop’ which made of steel. The white part is the one we call “steel dome” or “housetop” , which are made of steel )You can imagine how big it is! Let’s look at the picture 2, then you get it!

2) A bus under the steel dome.

3) steel dome( housetop)

4) Such a beautiful steel dome
5) steel tubing dome

6) A bird in a stainless steel dome. Funny?

Okay, I hope right now you can understand what a ‘steel dome’ stands for. Is it funny? Maybe. We can say sometimes the things are not what we get from the surface, but also not what we see while digging in it.
How’s your opinion about it, my friend? Have you encounter any similar things? If so, feel free to share it.

before I read this article, I really don’t know what it is,but after i read it, I have more ideas, that it’s simply like a conjuction for a circle. when it’s pushed, it formed a circle so that other components will work together. and in normal state, it will not work. This is what I understand from this.

Haha, thanks everybody. Your understanding is my best pleasure.

Nice article. You can also mention that someone that glanced over the site still thought you were selling steel domes
Btw, I’d suggest a couple of things:
- make sure the images are of the lowest size possible without losing any quality
- display your name instead of ‘admin’ when you post
- delete the existing spam comments (#11 here) from your ‘manage comments’ board or when your Akismet plugin (enable it, if you haven’t already) detects them. This will keep up the quality of your comments.
